50th Civic Trust Awards open for entries

The Civic Trust Awards is one of the oldest built environment award schemes in Europe, to reward building projects which have made a difference to local people and their communities by providing the design and facilities which have made better places for people.

Award categories include:
• Inclusive Design Award
• Hard Landscaping Award
• Housing Award
• Northern Ireland Public Realm Award
• Partnership Award (sponsored by English Partnerships)
• Sustainability Award

Winners are selected on the basis of benefit to the local community as well as architecture.  Entries can be made by anyone closely connected with a project, so long as the permission of the owner and occupier of the scheme has been obtained prior to entering.  Schemes must be visible to the public - it must be possible to see most of it, all year round, from a public thoroughfare.

This year’s deadline for entry is 2 September 2008. Judging takes place in October and November, with the Awards being announced in March.

First 'Changing Places Through People' project complete

We are proud to announce that the first grant project as part of the 'Changing Places Through People' programme of work in Colchester has been completed.  On 15 July 2008, the Stansted Road World War Bunker was unveiled in front of fifty guests with a blessing from the vicar.  Certificates were presented to the young people involved.  A special thank you also went out to the sponsors of the project.

Peter Alder, East Colchester Project Manager, personally thanked our colleague Jonathan Rochford, Project Manager for Haven Gateway:"Well done on such a splendid project – my congratulations to the residents and children of Monkwick who conceived and executed this extremely attractive artwork to both conceal and yet preserve this reminder of a dark time in Britain’s modern history. The scenery in the paintings glorifies the countryside that so many people fought to keep free and for which so many gave their lives. I hope that this project will become an inspiration not only for the people of Monkwick and passers-by but also for other communities to explore how they can brighten up their areas by transforming dull and derelict structures into attractive and meaningful assets".
